Workshop in Nahuatl

On October 6 and 7 of 2016, as part of the ENGHUM project we will carry out a workshop for native speakers of Nahuatl (including writers, students, researchers, teachers and activists) as well as participants from the Faculty of „Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw. Over thirty native speakers of the language will meet at Mexico's National Archives to read and discuss manuscripts written by their ancestors during the country's colonial period, as well as explore ways to strengthen and develop teaching, research and revitalization activities related to their language and culture. The discussions will be held entirely in Nahuatl, highlighting both the mutual inteligibility of each participant's variant, as well as the capacity of the language to serve as a tool for advanced academic work.

Mother Language Day in Wilamowice

International Mother Language Day is celebrated annually on 21 February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in November 1999, while on 16 May 2009 the United Nations General Assembly called upon Member States "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world". For the first time it will be celebrated in the town of Wilamowice, whose citizens, along with an international group of researchers and activists, strive to preserve the local language and associated cultural heritage.

The second cultural event „Languages across divides”

Our event will take place on Thursday, November 27th 2014 at 18.30, in our Faculty building (72 Dobra Street, room 9). We will present the play "Cinteotl ihuan Chicomexochitl imamacuetlaxxo" ("The paper skin of Cinteotl and Chicomexochitl"), directed by Antonio Guerra, a Mexican director and theatreologist, with the assistance of Beatriz Cuahutle, a native speaker of Nahuatl from Tlaxcala. The play will be performed by the students of Nahuatl from the Faculty of „Artes Liberales”, who will interpret the myth about the birth of the corn deity, and particularly two ethnodramas of both pre-Hispanic and contemporary origin: "Ochpaniztli" and "La Fiesta de Elotes", celebrated in the Huasteca Veracruzana region of Mexico. The script for the play was written collectively by Eduardo de la Cruz Cruz, Justyna Olko, Antonio Guerra and Victoriano de la Cruz Cruz.
The program of the event includes the presentation of the book “Wymysiöejer fibl”, dedicated to young readers and students of Wymysorys language. The author and the illustrator of the book Justyna Majerska is actively involved in the process of Wymysorys language revitalization and teaching, together with Tymoteusz Król and other members of the community.

Wymysiöejer fibl

It is our second book of the series „Ynzer kyndyn”, dedicated to young readers. Although a growing children’s literature fills a large gap in the Wilamowicean writing tradition, “Wymysiöejer fibl” attempts to reach a wider audience as well. The illustrations, which depict everyday life of the Wilamowicean people, their traditional clothes, celebrations and landscapes, allow the reader to immerse himself in the Wilamowicean culture. The pictures were made by a Vilamovian- Justyna Majerska. This example breaks another stereotype about Wymysorys- that people from Wilamowicean community do not engage in the revitalization of their language.
